This mom hunted down the cartel that took her daughter

While the story sounds like it would make a better movie than Liam Neeson's legendary Taken, a mother from Mexico actually succeeded in finding her daughter's killers. Miriam Rodrigues's daughter Karen was taken in 2012 and her remains were found in 2014.

Disguised as a healthcare worker conducting a survey within the local area, Miriam, with her son Luis's help, tracked down enough information to arrest the prime suspect in her daughter's kidnapping. Miriam faced off against one of Mexico's most dangerous drug cartels, Los Zetas.
Convinced the authorities did not do enough to track Karen, Miriam also interrogated one of the gang members behind bars and persuaded him to reveal the location of her daughter.

Now very famously known as a human rights activist in kidnapping cases, Miriam went on to keep hunting down these gang members throughout the next years and helping evacuate a mass grave of bodies in the process.

In an extremely tragic end to the story, however, Miriam was reportedly gunned down by men who broke into her home on Mother's Day; 10 May 2017, and shot her twelve times.
