This Sunday, the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology has signed an agreement with China’s Zhongyi Instek Import & Export Co, Ltd to build solar-powered ice plants in four residential islands.
The ceremony was inaugurated by the Minister of Fisheries, Marine Resources and AgricultureDr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan and attended by the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Aminath Shauna. This new move is part of the government's current efforts to achieve net zero emissions by 2030.
According to the Environment Ministry, INSTEC will be carrying out the design, installation and maintenance of solar-powered ice plants in N. Landhoo, Th. Vilufushi, Th. Madifushi and Th. Buruni. While three of the islands will house 15-tonne ice plants with 30-ton storage, a 5-ton ice plant with 15-ton storage will be located in Th. Buruni.
The Zhongyi Instek Import & Export Co, Ltd. was established in 1986 and is a subsidiary of China National Instruments Import and Export (Group) Corporation, well-known for their self-equipped TV OB truck. The company has been given 240 days from the date of signing the contract to complete the project.
The Ministry revealed that the project will cost MVR 1.7 million to complete.
