Authorities in Mumbai have recovered gold worth approximately MVR 3.7 million (USD 243,589) hidden in the toilet of a flight originating from the Maldives earlier this month. The gold was discovered concealed within the light panel of the aircraft's restroom during a search conducted by the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Mumbai Customs.

A 24-year-old Indian man, Imamul Hasan, from Karnataka, has been arrested in connection with the case. Customs officials revealed that Hasan was a passenger on the flight and was in the arrival hall when the contraband gold was discovered. Upon questioning, Hasan admitted to attempting to smuggle the gold. Authorities suspect the operation involved a network of individuals, including airport staff in Mumbai, to facilitate the smuggling.

During the search, 13 pouches containing gold were recovered from the light panel of the aircraft's toilet, following intelligence inputs about smugglers using this method. Officials stated that smugglers often hide gold in aircraft waste compartments or fixtures, which are later retrieved by accomplices working at the airport.

Customs officials suspect the smuggling attempt was linked to a broader network. A recent bust by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) uncovered a syndicate that specializes in smuggling gold using similar tactics. Reports indicate that those aiding such operations are often promised substantial monetary rewards.

Investigations are ongoing to determine how the gold was brought aboard the flight and the extent of the involvement of airport staff or other associates.
